Recognizing Acts of Heroism

What is heroism? This unit delves deeply into the concept. Through multiple readings and activities guiding analysis and interpretation, students examine a layered definition of heroism, identify the heroic acts of everyday people, and question the decisions of a tragic hero.

Lessons are rich in concept-driven vocabulary and promote a refined use of sentence structures for description, and cause and effect relationships. By teaching students how to structure academic writing, lessons carefully guide them to craft a well-designed expository essay.

The unit includes:

  • Curriculum guide totaling 10-15 hours of instruction
  • Student workbook with readings, tools for analysis, and writing templates

Note: The units are based on 9th-10th grade English Language Arts standards and have been successfully used with 8th through 12th graders. The multiple readings increase in difficulty throughout each unit.
