Teacher Strand

Secondary Systematic ELD is a detailed framework for designing ELD instruction that teaches and practices the vocabulary and grammatical structures of English for a wide range of purposes at each level of proficiency.

The purpose of the institute is to build the capacity of district and site ELD teacher leaders and administrators to provide guidance and targeted instruction in the area of Systematic ELD. Participants will learn to use the Secondary Systematic ELD Handbook and Instructional Units as appropriate to plan strategic and systematic instruction.

Institute Outcomes

Through presentation, reading, small group processing, and large group discussion, participants will:

  • Become familiar with the salient features that make Systematic ELD distinct from other good instruction for English learners
  • Learn a framework for how to plan, teach, and monitor ELD instruction at each level of English proficiency

Build a repertoire of instructional routines for teaching and providing structured opportunities for oral and written language practice.

Who should attend the Teacher Strand?

Open to partner districts and charter organizations. Teams must include at least two participants (classroom ELD teachers, site coach, resource teacher(s) and/or administrator). There must also be an administrator who will attend the Administrator Strand.
