This Starter Toolkit is a resource to introduce school staff to A Focused Approach: Instruction for English Learners, which serves as the foundation for E.L. Achieve's professional development offerings.
Recurring themes of A Focused Approach include:
The overarching goal is to provide teachers and administrators with knowledge, skills and tools to: Equip English learners with the language they need
to express the sophistication of their thinking for
real life and academic purposes.
A Focused Approach is based on a
1) Blueprint for English Learner Instruction that provides a comprehensive view of the instructional day, and 2) Features of Explicit Language Instruction that backward maps language instruction from task analysis to instruction.
These are explained in this Starter Toolkit. Additionally, to illustrate the resources found in institute handbooks, we have included a sampling of instructional tools. Finally, we provide introductory information about the challenge English learners face, English proficiency levels, and the Express Placement Assessment for Systematic ELD.
This Starter Toolkit is not designed to equip educators with sufficient guidance needed to implement instruction. That requires comprehensive training and support for implementation, available only through Institutes offered by E.L. Achieve.
A Starter Toolkit Facilitator's CD is also available, providing powerpoint presentations and resources for five 30-45 minute sessions.
